KMO-portefeuille and language training

How Belgian companies recover up to 30% of their investment

Most Belgian companies leave money on the table when it comes to language training. Not because they do not want to invest, but because they are not aware that government support is available.

If your company is based in Flanders, there is a strong chance you qualify for the KMO-portefeuille programme. Many HR managers we speak to have either never heard of it or are unsure how to apply it. Here is what you need to know.

KMO Portefeuille

What is the KMO-portefeuille?

The KMO-portefeuille is a Flemish government subsidy that helps SMEs and self-employed professionals cover the cost of approved training. Language training qualifies, provided the training partner is officially registered.

Small enterprises receive up to 30% support. Medium-sized enterprises receive up to 20% support. The annual ceiling is €7,500 per company.

Semantics Belgium is a registered provider (DV.O214452).

Who qualifies?

Any SME or self-employed professional established in the Flemish region may be eligible. If you are unsure, VLAIO offers a quick eligibility check on its website.

Are there other subsidies worth knowing about?

Two are particularly relevant.

If your organisation is in the food industry, Alimento offers additional support for language training delivered by Semantics.

For individual employees, Vlaams Opleidingsverlof (VOV) allows staff to attend training during working hours while continuing to receive their salary. Employers can claim a flat-rate reimbursement of wage costs. The training must include at least 32 contact hours within one year.

What it comes down to

Corporate language training in Belgium is already a smart investment. With the right language training subsidies in place, it becomes far more accessible.

If you are based in Flanders, it is worth checking your eligibility before setting your budget.
